Geoffrey Canada and his Harlem Childrens Zone Charter School-s have struggled with the same difficulties faced by other urban schools, even as they outspend them. After a rocky start several years ago typical of many new schools, Mr. Canada’s two charter schools, featured as unqualified successes in “WaitingForSuperman, ” the new documentary, again hit choppy waters this summer, when New York State made its exams harder to pass. A drop-off occurred, in spite of private donations that keep class sizes small, allow for an extended school day and an 11-month school year, and offer students incentives for good performance like trips to the Galápagos Islands or Disney World.

Jaron Pereira: Colliding spatial ideas. I don't beleive technology is arbitrary or commodotized. I think the choices we make around the tools and systems we use to build still exert an enormous force on what we build, and the values expressed through that (more)
A technological fix, technical fix, technological shortcut or solutionism refers to the attempt of using engineering or technology to solve a problem (often created by earlier technological interventions).[1] Some references define technological fix as an "attempt to repair the harm of a technology by modification of the system", that might involve modification of the machine and/or modification of the procedures for operating and maintaining it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_fix (more)
This is the safest indoor space to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to a mechanical engineer. I am a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. Much of my work has focused on how to control the transmission of airborne infectious diseases indoors, and I’ve been asked by my own university, my kids’ schools, and even the Alaska State Legislature for advice on how to make indoor spaces safe during this pandemic (more)
The coronavirus is airborne. Here’s how to know if you’re breathing other people’s breath. Crandall’s restaurant is open again — with a CO2 monitor that displays a reading he tries to keep under 450 parts per million, only slightly higher than levels in the outside air, per state policy. Thanks to the human burning of fossil fuels, outdoor levels currently average about 415 parts per million, and are steadily rising. (more)

In computer networking, a Media Access Control address (MAC address), Ethernet Hardware Address (EHA), hardware address, adapter address or physical address is a quasi-unique identifier assigned to most network adapters or network interface cards (NICs) by the manufacturer for identification. If assigned by the manufacturer, a MAC address usually encodes the manufacturer's registered identification number. (more)
'Miami Tech Week' Wasn't' Planned. But the Hype Is Infectious. Founders and funders are flocking to the beach for an impromptu event that some are calling "South by Southeast." (more)
Mike Solana: Misery and Joy. A honey trap for activists. If you’ve spent any time in San Francisco over the last half-decade you’ve seen a playful honey bear or two — or ten — on the side of a building, or in the window of a coy Victorian. (more)
Mike Solana: Extract or Die. Digging for microcode. As the catastrophic state of California’s finances finally begins to set in among politicians, anti-tech media personalities, and far left cultural influencers, the narrative on California’s techxodus — that is, the migration of California’s technology industry out of the state — has shifted from mockery, and “we’ll be better off without you,” to a far more sober, and increasingly-desperate “leaving California is immoral.” (more)
